Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Canvas CHM4410
The laws of thermodynamics describe the transformation of energy from one form into another in bulk matter, and thus allow quantitative discussion of e. g. heat exchange, mechanical or chemical work. In this regard, the laws of thermodynamics allow us to understand, predict and control the operation of physical systems (chemical reactions, states of matter, solution formation, and efficiency of energy production). Given that bulk matter is composed of a large number of particles (atoms and molecules), statistical mechanics provides a link between the microscopic and the bulk properties of matter, i.e. describes thermodynamics at the molecular level.
